The Search for Sven

For once, El had to jog to catch up with me.

“I can’t believe you.” My voice was low, but menacing. “How could you invite them to the danceathon?”

“I didn’t. I—” he said, but I didn’t want to hear it.

“Neutron is my place. When Chad and I broke up, he got Patty’s Pub, and I got Neutron. He only comes when he is expressly invited by me.”

“To be fair—”

“In fact,” I whirled around and pointed a finger at his big chest, “I never actually invited you to the danceathon.”

His mouth drooped. I’d hurt his feelings, but I was too mad to care at the moment. “Then you went and invited Rochelle.”

“I didn’t realize we weren’t welcome.” His voice was soft and sad. A tickle of guilt worked its way through my rage. I ignored it.

“That’s not the point.” I turned toward the stairs again and continued walking but slowed my pace. “You and Rochelle can do what you want. Except invite the Vikings. That’s not okay.”

El grabbed my arm and pulled me to a stop. “I didn’t invite them. I, stupidly, mentioned I was going to dance in the danceathon. I had no idea they’d be interested, honestly. Why would I? They’re Vikings, for Pete’s sake. It’s not like I said we were going marauding or something.”

My head twitched involuntarily. He had a point, a point I wasn’t ready to concede. “I’m glad you recognize it was a stupid thing to mention.”

He released my arm, and we began walking side by side. “Why did you?”

“Ulf is very competitive.”

“That’s what Lars said.” I’d wanted to talk more with Lars tonight but had never gotten the chance.

“Well, he wasn’t kidding. Ulf must have brought up the Warrior’s Way thing ten times. I kept bowing out, telling him the ax throwing competition was beginner’s luck and all that.”

“The danceathon,” I reminded him.

“Right. So, I thought if I said my kind of competing was dance, he’d laugh at me, figure I wasn’t super masculine and drop it.”

“But he didn’t.”

“No, he didn’t.”

When we got to the stairs, we went up single file. It gave me a minute to think things through. I could see El’s logic. It had backfired on him, but there had been a kind of sense to it. My anger drained away by the time we reached the top. “I’m sorry I said anything about you and Rochelle dancing in the competition. I’m glad you’re coming.” That wasn’t one hundred percent true, but I wanted it to be true.

“That’s okay. You were mad about Ulf.”

We climbed into the truck. Well, I climbed. El just stepped in. That was something else that made me uncomfortable about tonight. I hadn’t realized how much bigger all these people were than the average Californian. It was intimidating.

“I learned something interesting though, before . . . “ El said.

I buckled my seatbelt. “What?”

“I searched Sven online but had a hard time finding anything before his college days. It was as if he didn’t exist until he turned eighteen.
